    Cool Yahoo Paid Directory

Another question for you guys (and gal's)....

Are any of you using the Yahoo directory (a listing for $299 per year) ?

We still use it for some of our sites, and it's one of those things that is a little hard to know "for sure" that it's working. Many SEO's still favour using it, and I guess the thing is, once you have the ranking you are reluctant to remove it just in case....

But anyway, please post your experiences with using a Yahoo directory listing.

    Thanks

    Tim

I have used it on two of my sites, but due to its cost im reluctant to use it on loads of sites.

Like you I'm not sure of its worth although it did increase my rank I think $300 (as near as damn it) spent on articles would have yielded the same if not better results.

I believe newer domains benefit more from the listing than older ones. Just an observation of mine, could well be wrong

It's a pretty good business model they have I think when you are "unsure" whether it's helping but are reluctant to stop paying just in case !

We do have some incredibly good ranking sites with few backlinks on a site using this, and do wonder if it's related to this. I might do a test when I get some time and setup a new site with a few backlinks and a competitive keyword and put it in yahoo directory and see what happens.

Interesting observation about the newer site, could possibly be true.

Would also have to wonder about article marketing because that would give you a lot of article for the price wouldn't it?

    Cheers

Yeah you should get alot of articles for that.

I like that articles give god traffic as well as good backlinks

Get your RSS feeds and push a few backlinks to the articles too

As I said though, we have a site that is ranking incredible well given the amount of keywords so we have to consider it could be the yahoo directory doing it.

Would need further testing and at $299 a pop it's not cheap to do a full test across 10+ domains which we would normall do !

    Cheers

Yeah I can see that, it makes perfect sense that google would trust the yahoo Dir because at $300 small time scammers are not going to pay for it.

+ yeah 3k to do the relevent tests is not cheap, hense I guess why no one is 100% sure

    Cheers

That's true, a spammer will not spent any money like this generally. I think most SEO's would suggest there is still value there (submitting a link to Yahoo).

DMOZ is crazy though, it seems to take 6 months or more in many cases for your application to go through and there is no guarantee of approval.

    Cheers

    Hi

I paid for a Yahoo Dir listing several weeks ago and its yet to appear. I've contacted their support about it and heard nothing. Is this typical?

Sorry Jeff, I missed your reply here until now.

No this is not normal in my experience, chase them up again. Generally they are reasonably fast in responding, etc. Not perfect of course.

Let us know how you go.

    Cheers

I've considered using the yahoo directory but I generally rank really well for Yahoo in all of my sites, not quite sure why exactly. I guess I just dot the i's and cross the t's whenever i'm putting content out there.

One tip I can varify is using a html version of your sitemap linked from your homepage, it will help your rankings within Yahoo.
In fact i forgot about this little tip until last week on one of my sites and by incorporating the html sitemap I went from 10/20 page one ranking for my keywords to 16/20 in 48 hours. very happy with the result.
