On-Page Optimization:
Start with your 2 important meta tags, your meta description and your meta keywords. You description needs to be about 160 characters long and relavant to the content on your page. Your keywords also need to be relevant to your content. Don't stuff tons and tons of keywords into this section or Google will just pass right over you.
The content on your page(s) including your headings, title tags, etc., need to be keyword rich, but not stuffed.
Everything needs to be relevant content on what you're trying to rank well in Google for because if you get people from Google, and don't have relevant content on your page, all you're going to get is a nice bounce rate.
Make sure all images have alt tags properly applied.
Make sure all links are working, and fix anyone broken ones, you can always run your site through w3 to check for broken and incorrect links and page structure.
Off-Page Optimization:
This is hands down where you'll be spending the majority of your time and efforts in your SEO campaign.
Backlinks - You can grab backlinks from anywhere, but there's two important things to generally 3 things to remember about backlinks. 1. Try to make them come from sites with a high PR. 2. Make them come from relevant content sites. 3. Always try to get one way links, 3 ways are ok, but reciprocal linking is almost useless.
Blogs - Create blogs on as many sites as you can including xanga, blogspot, tumblr, etc. You can post links in them, have great content and information about you in themm, and provide backlinks and possible referral traffic.
Social Media - Uh oh, social media exploded for SEO. With so many social media sites out there, get on a lot. Make profiles with greate content and links back. Some sites have nofollow links in places, so figure out what sites have the nofollow links and where they use them, and don't spend a lot of time there. Myspace, Formspring, etc are greate ways for people to keep updated with you, get to know you, as well as create a following on these sites.
Forums - Once again, another great way for people to get to know you as well as get your site out there and known. Signatures are a great way to get some backlinks, but make sure that the forums don't do nofollow links in their signatures. And always be polite on forums.
Online Directories - There are plenty of free online directories out there, some of which are great and Google loves, so find them and submit your site to the APPROPRIATE category within that directory. You can also find directories that allow article submissions, and submit as many keyword rich, and link rich articles as you want.
Think of SEO as a garden... it's definitely not an overnight process. You don't take bare dirt, and turn it into a beautiful garden overnight.
First you have fertilize the soil, that's the start of your SEO campaign.
Then you have to plant your seeds, or the SEO foundation like backlinks, social media, blogs, etc.
Then you have to water it and give it atttention, meaning stay on top of things and active on sites for your SEO.
Then wait for it to grow while still giving it attention, let Google crawl it, and index it, while you continue your SEO efforts.
The once it bloomed, you need to cut back on it and trim it, meaning find what's working and what isn't and up the good and cut out the bad.
SEO in the long run takes time and patience, but ask any successful SEO person, it's worth it.
