What SEO strategy would you use?

    Hey guys,

My friend has a business based on ebay and wanted to branch off from there and create his own website as well. He asked me to take care of the SEO for it since i have been studying this for quite awhile. The only problem is that all the seo i have learned is for information sites. I have learned a lot about web 2.0 from you guys but i dont know if i should use web 2.0 or some other marketing strategy.

    Thanks much

    Hiya Plearth

SEO is SEO and what's good for getting information sites ranked applies the same for an ebay site. There is a good chance though, that if he specializes in a particular product, the competition could be high for those keywords so you can set up the site to target that competitive main keyword and then create some posts that target related keywords and longtails and at the same time build backlinks to the site using that main keyword as the anchor plus some of the related and longtails every now and then. What'll happen is if the main keyword is competitive, you'll start getting ranked for the related which will help build authority for the main keyword. Watch your stats for some great longtails.

As far as onsite/on page seo, pretty much everything you need can be taken care of by all-in-one seo plugin. Building internal links is also a really strong way to boost your site. For every page I create on my sites, I try to create at least five internal links using that page's keyword as the anchor. This is probably how wikipedia and about. com got to be so strong.

As for those times when you get sandboxed or are done there at #500, ezine articles is a great place to get some traffic.

Thanks very much for clearing that up for me and giving me some good advice on what to do
i have done some keyword research and i could not find a keyword that has a high search volume. My question is does low traffic mean less help that the link is too the other site?

    Glad to help Plearth,

I'm not sure I exactly understand what you mean by needing "less help that the link is too the other site." but I'm guessing your asking if search volume is an indication of competition strength and the answer to that is no. Search volume is just the number of times per month that a keyword is looked up in a search engine. If you read around on these forums and others most people are trying to just competition by the amount of competing pages reasoning that less competing pages is better 9000 search results is better than 1,000,000 search results. What I think a lot of people miss is that being number 9000 out of 9000 competing pages is just as bad as being number 9000 out of 1,000,000 competing pages. To me (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) you only really need to look at the first few search results to get an idea how well other pages are optimized for a certain keyword as well as how many backlinks existing pages already have. To access the competition, I use a free tool called seo for firefox which has a pr checker and these are the criteria I use when judging the competition. If any of the top 4 pages in the serps are pr 4 and have the exact keyword in the title I pass on that keyword (no go) If any of the top 4 pages in the serps are pr 5 I pass on that keyword (no go). PR 3 (and lower) with the exact keyword in the title is a "go" in my book--without the keyword in the title even better.

As far as search volume goes, I think the more that your selling like a real product the less important search volume becomes (to a point). Looking at my adsense account, I made $116 today and my highest clicks were around $2.00 with a crap load of $0.50 clicks so you see this is where high search volume is super important.

SEO is the same for every site. Select right Keywords ( Market samurai) hogg into Web 2.0 properties and bam ! The bucks start arriving in the mail.. Just kidding. It takes a while before SEO takes place and gives you any results, in fact too long. You need to use some [paid] traffic strategies like PPC or Media buys to get some money in your pockets early on.

Thanks for that but it wasn't exactly what i was asking. My apologizes. Let me try to clarify this a little better. What i am asking is if a web page ranked #1 on google for a low traffic keyword carries less authority when linked to another site than if it ranked for a high traffic keyword?

The answer is no... there are quite a few things that determine a sites authority. These thing include number of back links to the page, quality of those links, the age and size of the site etc., Search volume however isn't an indication of authority.

Construction of a link wheel is not considered to be minimum effort, from writing an article takes time and submitting one is really stuff job. According to me it an good strategy, but it will take time.

Seo strategies that you can use for web 2.0 are building multiple blogs on multiple ideas around your expertise, all linking to each other and back to the main site. And you can join in social networking sites. You can open LinkedIn, FaceBook, MySpace or Twitter accounts for your company and or yourself. The one’s you choose largely depend on who your target audience is, but don’t underestimate the power of these locations.
