    Marketing advice

I own a flooring business just outside of Atlanta, GA in the US. I am part of a franchise and I would love to drive traffic to my website to set up in home flooring consultations to sell some flooring. I am taking your 12 days to page one course and want to know how my campaign to drive web traffic would differ from affiliate marketing campaigns. What should be my focus? Thanks for any help.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

In principle many aspects if not most aspects of driving traffic is the same for "promoting" your website or an affiliate product. In reality you are trying to get traffic (visitors) to either your page or the affiliate offer.

So I recommend you focus on good keyword research to indentify your prospects search for "problems" you can solve at your site, in this case flooring.

The good news is that it's easier to target "local" traffic (people in/around Atlanta, GA in this case) that targeting flooring prospects world wide. So look into finding keywords for "local" searches e.g. buy flooring atlanta. That was an example only.

Assuming you are just servicing that area, be sure to check out the thread below which discusses some common things to do when targeting local keywords.

    Google Local Search Results

    Regards

Focus on local keywords. You can use Google Adwords keyword tool to find the appropriate keywords to target. Find keywords that don't necessarily have the highest searches per month as these are often too competitive with little conversion.

    Mward27,

I am going to step out of line here and talk about local marketing (aka off-line marketing or main street marketing) as opposed to traditional SEO marketing. They are way different...

Once you start looking at localizing your searches to a local area, all the rules change. Traffic and competition number go out the window, and a #1 Google listing is a) not that hard, and b) not that important...

Assuming you were in Plains, you want to get traffic from your area, so adding 'Plains' to your terms helps immensely. 'Plains Flooring Contractors' (or Parquet Flooring, or what ever your specialties are) are better candidate URLs. As soon as your customers add your city name to their search - you win... Even if they don't - you still win 'cause Google knows where they are - near you!

You are NOT competing in other states, and, coupled with 3rd party citations that include your business name, address and phone number EXACTLY AS THEY APPEAR IN THE PHONE BOOK, adding your location to your URL will crush it (<- technical term).

It took less than 14 hours to get my barber from no web site at all to #1 in Google for 'Camarillo Hair Salon'.

Hilda also enjoys multiple nested listing, maps on Google, Yahoo and Bing, and many of the citation sites also appear for her, pushing her competitors off the first page. She has an unfair advantage

Nota Bene: If you have a Google 'Places' (the map) listing that is currently showing well - DO NOT change anything! Take control of it if you haven't already done so, but do not change the data!
Changes in the algorithms - and a crack-down on gaming places listings* - will put you in the sandbox while you wait for review - and that will take weeks...

Other things to consider as you move onto main street are other forms of local traffic. Craig's list totally rocks. The people aren't the highest income, but traffic is traffic, and the CL ads (when done right) give you a huge BL/SEO advantage. The ads expire LONG BEFORE the BL does, therefore a few live ads add up to many BLs.

These (and some other locations) that allow you to enter html let you wind up with click-able graphic ads that make you stand out. Here's one of Hilda's ads Camarillo Hair Stylist | 805-377-9840 and one with an animated GIF Lucerne Italian Restaurant for Business Lunches (it takes less than 30 seconds to post either ad). Since CL doesn't allow streamed content, the GIF and the play button on the obvious video player make these quite unusual...

BONUS! Maybe this will help give you a better overview of the local marketing scene and show you how to set up your places listing. I should make you go through the long-form sales letter, but it is free - so, let's cut to the chase; go here and put you name in to get the 25-page Put Your Business on the Map PDF.

I am going to dump a lot of local info into that channel so you might want to get on board

    ----------------
    * This IS the new Google slap...

If you really want to get successful in marketing then you should start learning more about internet marketing and affiliate marketing. It is also advisable to create your own website where you can easily promote your sales and products.
