    Backlinks v On page SEO

Which of the two will rank higher, for instance if I check my competition and there's a site on the top 3 of google that has 903 page backlinks and 1350 domain backlinks.

But the owner of the site hasn't done any on page seo, the keyword isn't in the title, header tag or description. Basically I think the site is an affiliate site which is on clickbank and loads of people are linking to it.

Can I still beat this site and and do I need more page backlinks or domain backlinks to do it.

Backlinks will win, but don't disregard onpage SEO. If the number of backlinks are the same then obviously the one with better onpage SEO will win. If you listen to guys like Nathan Anderson and Daniel Tan, they will tell you that with great onpage SEO, you can outrank a site with just 10-15 backlinks when the other site with bad onpage SEO has even100-150 links, that's how powerful onpage SEO is if done right. Obviously the person with both - great onpage SEO and good backlinks will be unbeatable.

SEO and Back-links go hand in hand when it comes to besting the competition. It is not a good idea to get a flood of back links all of a sudden because Google will put you on their radar.

Another thing that has got Google itching now is LSI content in the posts. (Latent Semantic Indexing).

It sort of amounts to having your Keywords related to each other. It's not that difficult to construct an article so that the google bots will squeal with delight when they crawl your articles on your site. This, or so it's believed, will boost your SERP standings

I think like a husband and wife, they are a team. Back links mean nothing without a quality of on-page SEO. You can build a million high quality links to a blank page and all you’ll have is a million links pointing to a page that no one wants to visit.

It sounds like in this case your competing site has probably done the correct SEO work for other pages but not for the particular keyword you are looking at. For example often you'll see Amazon in the top results because they have so many pages indexed and Google chooses something similar to the keyword you are targeting on the Amazon site but it won't be optimised. So if you get your on page stuff right and there are other sites in the top 10 that have a low PR and less backlinks then you should be in a good position to rank for the keyword.
    Hope that makes sense, Kerry

    Hiya Newbie,

It's not a case of either or, but rather, all of the above. Can you beat the site? Of course you can; it's really a matter of whether or not it's worth your time and do you have the discipline to do the work needed.

    Hope that helps,
    Chris

Wink Socialize Your Website And Google Loves You!

I notice the discussion makes no mention what type of site? Wordpress , Flash, html ,Hubpage, Squidoo, Video , Membership ,I dont know..in any case what I do know is clicks on the site matter to Google and other search spiders..Give Google what it wants and the rest follow. Websites have to be popular .. similar to sitting at the table having dinner with Julia Roberts naturally everyone in the room will want to sit at your table

For SEO, you must have both quality content and daily links back to your site for the best results. Quality content alone on your website will not get you ranked. It will act as a bonus, however, to your site's rankings.

You must have both quality content, or on-page SEO, + daily links to get your site the best results. Simply having on-page SEO will not get you ranked high in the search engines.

Both are much important factors in SEO marketing. We all know about On-Page SEO techniques and how effective and necessary those are. Backlinks are even important for promote websites. Both factors are equally related with each other.
