    DMOZ directory submission experience

    Is my experience common?
I submitted a top level domain (for an education website) to the DMOZ directory in September. I have heard nothing from DMOZ, not even an acknowledgement. In view of the length of time I resubmitted on 18th March but I still have had no communication. How long do I need to wait? I don't even know whether they are considering it or not!

DMOZ is a not the best unfortunately. I've seen some links take 12 months to get approved or some around that time to get rejected. They get to you they are good and ready and it's just too bad if you don't like it (this appears to be their mantra). Be careful about ressubmitting, it may delay the process any more.

I usually tell people to submit their yahoo listing first (and make any necessary changes the yahoo directory people advise). and then to submit the exact format approved by yahoo to DMOZ. That way you have had a directory service look at your descriptions, etc so it's highly likely DMOZ won't have a problem with that when they do get to looking at your submission.

I also tell people that consider it a bonus if your get approved. e.g. Just submit it and move on.

They cannot be bought at any price he he (apparently).

    Regards

    Hi Michael,

It's frustrating that it works like this, and its worth it if you do manage to get a listing in DMOZ.

    Good luck with it!

I hate to think of all the life energy tens of thousands of site owners have wasted trying - hoping - praying to get listed in DMOZ. To think that somehow THAT link is gonna make or break a site is ludicrous. It's just one itty bit in a 1001-piece SEO puzzle - when one good blog post or article that gets traction could prove to be a 1000 times more 'valuable' than a DMOZ link. On soooo many levels DMOZ is really just an old dinosaur from the 1990's...

Do Yahoo & Bing do It For free?

    Re what Tim says above:

....I usually tell people to submit their yahoo listing first..........
Am I right in thinking that Yahoo charges US$299 per year to maintain the listing in their directory?

I did eventually get my main site listed in DMOZ (took about a year)
but have always chosen to ignore the Yahoo directory because of the price. Same goes for Bing!

Am i missing something here? Is there somewhere with Yahoo and Bing to submit your sites for free - as with DMOZ?

    Chris
