This whole marketing thing really tests my patience

My name is Patrick. I hated marketing in school, thought marketers were all a bunch of unrealistic people who needed a reality check. But here I am, marketing on the internet no less.

What curse is this that has been cast upon me.

I'm an old fart now, with no patience and haven't a clue sometimes about what direction to take a marketing campaign in. I really don't agree with the way internet marketers via to get your email addy then drive you crazy with one offer after another. Is this the only way that works? The list, the list, the list.

I am really reluctant to be put into this camp or am I doomed to failure.

Since I don't know the rules of conduct in this forum, I will stop here.

    Hiya Patrick,

Something that might be encouraging, is that there are multiple aspects of this online business stuff. For example, the foundation of what we do is traffic generation--getting eyeballs onto a page. What you do with the traffic after that is really up to you, but it is a skill. Don't want to capture emails, use your traffic building skills for lead generation. Negotiate with offline business for a referral fee. I have a laser hair removal site (in Japanese) that was showing ads for a clinic in my area. I phoned up the clinic and worked out a deal to have their ads directly on my site.

    Anyways, welcome to the forums
    Chris

    Chris...

OK, I can dig "eyes on the pages", traffic generation is a good objective in my mind's eye.

    Thanks for the leg up.

I have a question, are we not supposed to be mentioning our pages here or is that a sticky wickett.

    Patrick,

Glad to help. Of course the marketing begins after you've got the eyeballs, but it doesn't all have to be from the position of, "the only guys making money during the gold rush were the guys selling the shovels." Figure out a way to solve people's problems and build traffic.

Now about mentioning your pages... There's a couple ways to talk about your website, you can be promoting it or you can be asking for help with a problem. If you're promoting a site, then the rule is you need to have at least 20 posts here before adding a link in your signature. If you're asking for help, then you can post a link to that page in describing the problem.

I am trying to get the WTG working on one of my blogs. Here is my problem.
At hostgator I have a domain and I have several other blogs as add-on domains, because it is economical to do it this way.

The blog I am trying to install WTG on is one of these add-on domains.

I have created the "feeds" directory and set the permissions correctly, but when I try to Update the plugin, it does not see the directory at hostgator. I have tried every conceivable path string to get it to see the directory. It just keeps barking in red to create the directory.
When I did the VTG it was easy and worked the first try.

When I look at the created direcories over at hostgator, they are all there feeds, images, video, backup, with the right permissions.
Is this directory "feeds" thing (and the other directories image, video and backup) supposed to be off of the root and work as a trash bucket for all subordinate directories to the root, which would be add-on domains.

bigboardraiders.com is an add-on domain to the parent domain, this is where I am trying to install WTG.
There is another squirrely thing about this, I also have the .info and .net of bigboardraiders, so in hostgator I had to use different usernames for the same "bigboardraiders" part of the domain names. Does the username have anything to do with the location at hostgator.

I broached this problem in the WTG thread, a bunch people read it, no reply. Maybe they don't know, since you are a moderator can you direct me to who does know.

I tried to leave a ticket, can't find where the tickets are.

My patience is razor thin again.

    Patrick

    Hi Patrick

If you have WTG set up in an addon domain, you should only have to enter the folder name - no path is required. WTG knows what folder/path it is in, so just create a folder called "feeds" within your addon domain folder, and put "feeds" into the relevant box in WTG.

One thing that I always do by mistake is enter the folder name into the wrong box in the dashboard. For some reason I always end up putting it in the email box. Don't know why, but that's a potential reason for this not working for you.

Make sure the case matches exactly as well. It's best not to use capitals.

Let me know how it goes. If you go to the help desk and try to submit a ticket they will redirect you back here. The developers are present here, but not in the weekends.

    Brett:

This is really stupid. I went to the blog plugin and input the word "feeds" into the field and pressed update and it came back yellow. WTF.

Last night I put every possible combination into that field, including I'm sure, "feeds" and it barffed back in red, to create the directory.

Also, in Tim's video, it says to be aware of subdirectories, so I'm looking for the complications, and it was the simplest solution.

I hate it when that happens.
