The first thing you need to remember is that you are building a business, so provide value. Duplicate content may rank well for a short period of time and it doesn't work for all niches. I agree with you in shades. While yes you need to provide ‘value’; spinning articles is equally bad. With the Panda update, Google not just had it against ‘duplicate’ content, but against low-quality, spun and shallow content too. A good number of article directories, slapped by Panda, had spun content that caused bad user-experience.
