Using Analytics for Keyword Research and Increasing Your Adsense Earnings

Before I get into this, I want to stress that this works well IF you already have traffic. In the beginning when a website is young and is yet to see traffic, checking your stats is a waste of time and you'd be better off creating content and building links. Also I monetize by adsense only so while this may be useful for affiliates I don't know that the benefits would be the same. This strategy is also for larger sites.

Google analytics gives you a wealth of information regarding the keywords people are using to come to your site. You'll also find keywords that you won't see in your cpanel stats. What happens when you write a keyword targeted post, it's like you're creating a combination lock because Google is going to look at the content and they'll rank you for the keyword you're targeting but they'll also rank you for a bunch of other keywords based on the combination of other words on the page. For a lot of these keywords, you'll be naturally ranked on the first or second page and so being able to see these keywords, lets you edit your sites content to include them exactly which can help you get the number one ranking and this is all without any link building. Other things to do with these keywords is to include them as tags or use them for anchors when building links internal/back links.

To give you an example, let's say you target the keyword phrase, My Little Pony office chair. If you look at your Google analytics you might find that people are coming to your site using the phrases, My Little Pony desk, and My Little Pony Furniture and if you searched Google you might find your site ranking naturally #6 and #12 in the serps. You keyword targeted pages doesn't actually have those keywords in the text but it'd be very easy to work them in naturally which will increase your relevancy for those searches and all with a tiny bit of effort.

What's more, Google analytics has a feature that allows you to send email reports to yourself or anyone else that contain all of those keywords and do it on a regular schedule.

So how can this help you increase your income? Google analytics now allows you to link your adsense revenue with your analytics account so you can see what keywords are earning you money. For me, I like to sort by CPM and find a keyword that's getting quite a few clicks and then plug that word into Google's adwords keyword tool to find related keywords. Then I create a keyword targeted post using that high CPM keyword that was getting the good clicks as well as separate keyword targeted posts for the related keywords I found. Often those related keywords will also have a similarly high CPM and having the related pages and the internal links you can create, strengthens the rankings for all the pages which of course builds more traffic and more income.

If you haven't linked your adsense and your analytics, I highly recommended it!

I had heard from some other guru that it was a bad idea to link them together because then Big G can figure out how much money you are making, and for some reason that's a bad idea. I don't know, I will do some more checking before I commit my detailed info to be understood and read by Big Brother.

    Hiya Kelly,

Mysterious Marketer is right about Google owning both and if you are using Adsense then you better make sure that you're following their TOS. Also you can pretty much expect that if you're starting to earn any money using adsense, sooner or later, you're going to get a visual inspection so what does that mean? It means your site should be one the google inspector is going to like--something that puts the searcher first.

On the other hand, if you don't use analytics, like the "other guru" says, what method do you have for tracking the performance of keywords on your site? You can use channels when you set up the google ad but that only tells you how pages are performing. What if people are coming to your page using a keyword or key phrase that you had not planned for and that word or phrase was converting really well with adsense? If you're not using analytics with your adsense, you'd never know that and what's worse, you'd never be able to optimize your page for those keywords and phrases.

If you're creating spammy site, or if you're creating sites just for links, keep your adsense and your analytics off of those site but if you've got a great site that you wouldn't be afraid of someone from google looking at, connecting your analytics with adsesense will increase your earnings.

    Chris

Speaking of Google analytics, have you checked out real time stats (see you visitors arriving on your site in real time) ?

Also the heat map feature is cool showing you where your visitors are clicking when coming to your page.

Very impressive new features and of course the price is "right" as well
